The rule

English -ble becomes Portuguese -vel, and the vowel in front of it stays: -able → -ável, -ible → -ível. That vowel carries the stress, so Portuguese writes an accent on it. The final l softens to a w:

possível ≈ "po-SEE-vew"
confortável ≈ "con-for-TAH-vew"
